Purpose of the Program |
To enhance the quality of life and opportunities for individuals
with disabilities in the Commonwealth to become more independent, productive, integrated
and fully included in the community through systems change activities which increase
access and utilization of assistive technology devices and services.Hear this text

Definition of Assistive Technology Device |
Assistive Technology Device is any item, piece of equipment,
or product system, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized, that is
used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals
with disabilities.
Assistive Technology devices can be anything from a simple tool with no moving parts
to a sophisticated mechanical/electronic system.Hear this text

The Assistive Technology Service |
The Assistive Technology Service is any service that directly
assist an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an
assistive technology device.
It includes:
- The eveluation of the needs of an individual with a disability, including functional
evaluation in the individual's customary environment;
- Purchasing, leasing, or otherwise providing for the acquisition of assistive technology
devices by individuals with disabilities;
- Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing,
or replacing of assistive technology devices;
- Coordinating and using other therapies, interventions, or services with assistive
technology devices, such as those associated with existing education and rehabilitation
plans and programs.
- Training or technical assistance for an individual with disabilities, or where appropriate,
the family of individuals with disabilities; and
- Training or technical assistance for professionals, employers, or others who provide
services to employ, or are otherwise substantially involved in the major life functions
of individuals with disabilities.Hear this text
